This service was developed in response to service users suggestions made at house meetings and a Service User Forum in 2010. It is a ‘support staff’ driven enterprise to meet the wishes of some of the people we support across our wider services; this wish was to have a place to meet up in the evening with other people.
We already ran a disco on the last Wednesday of each month and over time, the people we support had developed roles for themselves, e.g. taking money at the door, serving drinks, doing the raffle and we paid a service user from another organisation to be our DJ from 2009 onwards.
This is now a user-led service with its own committee and volunteers and who set the rooms up, buy in the provisions, clean and tidy up etc each Wednesday with their staff support.
How it got off the ground: Managers facilitated a Forum later in 2011 to collect everyone’s ideas of what people wanted from their social club; what it would look like, what people wanted to do, what to call it, what to eat and drink, etc. – everyone was supported to have their say.
Staff volunteered to be involved with the Chill Mill and to be available and to resource what was required to get it up and running as service users had described they wanted it. Managers agreed to ensure staff numbers were appropriate in rota planning to support people who wish to attend from our services and to check out the Insurance and business side of things.
It has been a positive outcome all round.
Regular ‘Chill Miller’ meetings have now developed their own identity which is reflected in how the social evening has and continues to progress. Managers role is to be available for guidance and advice for support staff and auditing financial records.
We hold a disco on the last Wednesday of every month – 6pm to approx. 8.30pm
There will be a DJ – everyone enjoys the music, fun and the games that are organised.
